May 2021 - our garden bloom!

April is called "Travanj" in Croatian, which means grass — but this year it brought an unseasonal snowfall that pushed all of our planting back further than we'd have liked.

Once the weather turned, we hired a bobcat to turn over the soil, then went through by hand pulling out roots and rocks. After that it was furrows dug and a fair bit more weeding before anything could go in.

In went two rows each of zucchini, cherry tomatoes, beef tomatoes, roma tomatoes, eggplants, capsicum and green beans. Alongside those, lettuce varieties, rocket, spinach, rhubarb, celery, and a good spread of herbs — parsley, sage, basil, chives, dill, mint, oregano, thyme and coriander — plus lemongrass and ginger, which are new additions for us this year.

Early May is when the leafy greens come in, so we'll be harvesting those for homemade pesto, with a video to follow by the end of the month.

We also got twenty-four olive trees into the ground and built bamboo trellises, plus new lavender and rosemary plants to grow our supply for seasonings, sugar powder, wheat bags and body products.

Next on the list — upgrading the chicken coop, with twenty new young chickens due to arrive in the coming weeks.

Cheers, Mikki
